About Business License Guide

A plain-English resource built to help business owners understand which licensing steps to check - without the runaround.

We are on your side. That is our only job.

Business License Guide is an informational website. We are not a government agency, a law firm, a CPA firm, or a company that sells licensing services. We do not sell business formation, filing, or licensing services, and we keep editorial guidance separate from advertising.

Our job is to research common licensing layers and explain them in plain English, with practical steps and official-source links, so business owners know what to verify before they apply.

Why we built this

Starting a business is already hard. Figuring out which licenses you need shouldn't add weeks to the process. But most information online is generic, written for lawyers, buried in government PDFs, or written to sell you a service you don't need.

We saw entrepreneurs making expensive mistakes: applying for the wrong licenses, missing requirements they didn't know existed, or paying third-party services for filings or steps they may have been able to verify directly with official agencies. So we started researching each city individually and writing it all up in plain English.

How we research our content

Every guide on this site is individually researched. We start with official city and county government websites, read actual ordinances and license requirements, and verify by cross-referencing official application portals. We do not rely on summaries from other websites.

We update content when we find requirements have changed. If you notice something outdated, please contact us.

What we will never do

  • Sell licensing, filing, or business formation services
  • Sell your personal information
  • Accept paid placement inside editorial recommendations
  • Pretend to be a government agency
  • Provide content without linking to the original official source

🏛️ Official sources only

We link to city.gov and county websites — not third-party aggregators or resellers.

🔍 City-by-city research

We read actual municipal codes and applications, not summaries of summaries.

📣 Plain English always

Written for a first-time business owner at a kitchen table — not for lawyers.

🔔 We flag when things change

License rules change. We update content when we find something is outdated.

A note on accuracy

Business licensing requirements change frequently. While we keep every guide as accurate and current as possible, always verify requirements directly with the relevant city, county, or state office before submitting any application. This site is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice.
